SONY Playstation 5

Sony Playstation 5 was first released in late 2020. The base model includes an optical disc drive compatible with 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. The Digital Edition lacks the disc drive, as a lower-cost model for buying games only through online download. The Slim model in 2023 and Pro model in 2024 added more storage and features.

PS5 Dolby Atmos Support:
The PS5 has supported Dolby Atmos for gaming since September 2023, allowing users to experience immersive spatial audio through compatible HDMI devices like soundbars or AV receivers.

How to Enable:
To enable Dolby Atmos, navigate to Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Audio Format (Priority) and select "Dolby Atmos". Dolby Atmos must be available on the game. Not all games have Atmos.

PS5 software update for Dolby Atmos:

Version: 23.02-08.00.00 system software update for PS5 consoles - Sept. 2023
Dolby Atmos is supported, and you can enjoy 3D audio on HDMI devices that support Dolby Atmos. Enjoy an immersive audio experience with your supported HDMI device while playing PS5 games that support the Tempest 3D audio technology. Media apps that support Dolby Atmos can now deliver the spatial sound experience with your supported HDMI device.

To turn on Dolby Atmos, go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Audio Format (Priority), and then select Dolby Atmos.

You need the software update and HDMI 2.1 eARC capability on your devices. Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Audio Format Priority, and then select Dolby Atmos in the drop-down menu. Now your PS5 should be able to decode Dolby Atmos for gaming.

Add a Soundbar

To add a soundbar you can:
1. Connect an HDMI cable from TV HDMI ARC/eARC port to the soundbar's HDMI ARC/eARC port or

2. Connect an Optical audio cable from the TV's Optical audio OUT to the Soundbar's Optical audio IN

TV has HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel)
HDMI eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel)

Surround Sound SETTINGS:
From the main PS5 screen, Skip over to "Settings" > scroll down to "Sound" > go down to "Audio Output" and set "HDMI Device Type" to "AV Amplifier". If you're using a soundbar, you'll still want to select "AV Amplifier" instead of "Sound Bar", since the latter option doesn't seem to offer surround output.

PS5 direct connect to TV using HDMI cable and TV HDMI ARC/eARC port connect to Soundbar HDMI ARC/eARC port. Be sure to select on the Soundbar, the correct source input.

Settings on the TV:

Change from internal TV speaker to HDMI ARC Sound Out - HDMI ARC/eARC

TV HDMI port the PS5 is connected to: Set to "Bitstream" on that HDMI input (not PCM)

Set Digital Sound OUT to "Passthrough"

Be sure HDMI ARC/eARC is enabled on the TV

On the PS5:

Set Number of channels 5.1 or 7.1

Audio Format (Priority) set to "Linear PCM" (uncompressed audio).

Within a GAME:
Go to Options> Audio> Output

Look under CHANNELS for the audio format - for example "Auto (7.1ch)" to confirm audio settings.

TV does not have HDMI ARC
Use Optical Audio connection from TV to Soundbar

Using the optical audio connection, you will be limited to 2-channel stereo PCM or compressed 5.1 surround sound.

If your PS5 is connected directly to a capable soundbar, you should be able to use Linear PCM. If your PS5 is connected to your TV and then the TV to the soundbar through ARC, use Dolby otherwise your TV may downmix to 2.1 unless it can Passthrough the correct audio. If your TV supports HDMI 2.1 / eARC, you can use LPCM as it's able to forward all the channels to the soundbar.

Connect PS5 directly to Soundbar

There could be benefits to connecting the PS5 directly to a soundbar or AV Receiver instead of the TV. These may include:

• Better audio quality
• No audio delay
• Correct support for audio formats
• Potentially more audio options

However there could be drawbacks as well which could include:

• Compatibility - Soundbar may not support latest features
• Video lag

Soundbar rear ports

HDMI ARC has limited bandwidth, so ARC is unable to handle audio formats like Dolby TrueHD with Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD master audio, DTS:X. A soundbar might not be able to passthrough a 4K HDR10 signal and may limit you to 1080p video.

Soundbars vs Audio Video Receivers:

Pros:
Ease of Setup: Soundbars are generally plug-and-play, requiring minimal setup and fewer connections compared to AVRs.

Compact Design: Soundbars are designed to fit neatly in front of the TV, taking up less space than a full surround sound system.

Affordability: Soundbars are typically more affordable than a complete AVR system, making them a budget-friendly option for improving TV audio.

Improved Sound Quality: Soundbars offer a significant upgrade from the TV's built-in speakers, providing better clarity, bass, and overall sound quality.

Modern Features: Many soundbars support Dolby Atmos and DTS:X for immersive sound, and some even include wireless subwoofer and rear speaker options.

Cons:
Limited Surround Sound: While some soundbars offer virtual surround sound, they can't replicate the true surround experience of a dedicated AVR system.

Sound Quality Limitations: While soundbars have improved significantly, they may not deliver the same level of fidelity as a high-end AVR system with separate surround speakers.

Which one would you buy?
Comparing an AVR surround sound system setup to a soundbar there is a clear winner in sound quality and that is the AVR. Voices are sharper, lows have a deeper richness and your listening experience is simply better. However, when total cost and setup is considered, many if not most will opt for the soundbar. It is more convenient, takes up less space and gives you better sound than the TV speakers.
