Smart TV Introduction and Basics

FIRE TV STICK

What is a Fire TV Stick - How does it work

A streaming device such as Fire TV Stick allows you to access internet content from providers to your TV by using your home internet service and wireless router. The streaming device communicates to the router and out to internet providers. An APP or software that executes on your TV stick allows the provider to give you content and also to charge you if they want to. Their APP must be compatible with your gear.

Smart TV and Fire TV Stick Internet

Streaming from Internet on TV

By streaming content, you decide what and when to view, unlike cable or satellite TV. You choose what content and when you watch. Some content requires a paid subscription. Other content is free.

FIRE TV STICK

You need home internet service with a wireless router and a TV. Your TV can be a SONY or a SAMSUNG or any modern TV with HDMI. Then with the Fire TV stick you can stream movies, sports, news and more from internet content providers like Netflix and Hulu and YouTube.

With a newer TV simply plug the Fire TV Stick into an available HDMI input port on the TV. For older TVs, you need an adapter which converts HDMI to RCA and for even older TVs, you need an RF modulator to convert RCA to RF (channel 3 or 4)

There are currently four different Fire TV Stick models being sold. The Fire TV Stick Lite is the cheapest model at $29.99, while the regular Fire TV Stick goes for $39.99. The more expensive Fire TV Stick 4K usually costs 49.99, while the Fire TV Stick 4K Max is the most expensive model at $54.99.

You don’t need to pay a monthly fee to use a Fire TV Stick. Once you pay for the device, you can use it to stream movies and TV shows for free. However, it will cost money if you want to use the most popular streaming services.

Setup Fire TV Stick

Plug the Fire TV Stick into your TV's HDMI input port and then power it on by plugging the included power adapter into a wall outlet.

For an older TV using HDMI adapter

Put batteries in your Fire TV Stick's remote.

Power ON TV and select the HDMI input the Fire TV stick is connected to using the TV remote. SOURCE INPUT HDMI 3 for example.

Grab the remote for the Fire TV Stick and pair it to the TV. Press and hold the HOME button for about 10 secs. Then, Press PLAY button. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your Fire TV Stick.

You'll be asked to connect your Fire TV Stick to your Wi-Fi, as well as create or sign in to your Amazon account. You'll be able to set your preferred language. Select and press OK button.

Once you've set up your Fire TV Stick, you can start using it right away.

Choose your streaming services. Select the app you want and download the app. For example Netflix. Each app has their own requirements such as signon and payments. Enjoy streaming movies and shows from a variety of services including Prime Video, Netflix, Hulu, and Apple TV+.

How to Get to Fire TV Settings

There are a couple of ways to display the Settings menu. Go to the gear icon in the header on the home screen. Or, pressing the Alexa voice control you can say, "Alexa, launch settings."

Bluetooth Options

You can connect an external device using Bluetooth. This might be useful if you want to add a remote control or use Bluetooth headphones with your Fire TV.

Go to Settings > Controllers & Bluetooth Devices.
Select Amazon Fire TV Remotes or Game Controllers to pair one of these devices.

Select Other Bluetooth Devices and follow the instructions to pair your headphones, or receiver.

Updates to your Fire TV Stick Operating System

Amazon releases updates to the Fire TV operating system every few months so to get it

Go to Settings > My Fire TV > About.
Select Check for Updates.

The Fire TV Stick will then check for updates. If an update is available, you'll be asked for confirmation to apply it.

Q: Can I use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi?

A: Yes, an adapter is available from Amazon that allows Ethernet connection. Ethernet is faster and more reliable than Wi-Fi.
